Sony GPS Review

Greg Pretak

The Sony NV-U94T has a 4.8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth hands-free calling, pre-loaded maps of North America, text-to-speech and Position Plus (when the GPS loses a signal Position Plus keeps track of you). The NV-U94T also has a unique dual view which allows you to see a 3-D map and a conventional 2-D map side-by-side. The product weighs 8.8 oz, has a place for your Sony Duo Memory Stick, has a USB jack, headphone jack, external antenna and the 5 volt DC input jack. As of March 2010, you can purchase the unit new for $150 to $250 and used for $80 to $150.

Perks

The big perk with this device was the dual-view capability and traffic-alert system. The dual-view mode allowed a viewer to see a dynamic 3-D view of the road as well as a conventional map. This provided the viewer with visual information on exits off the highway and routes around his current location. The traffic-alert system provided real-time traffic information which allowed the unit to change your route if there was traffic.

Sacrifices

One of the main problems with this device is that you cannot attach a name to an address in the address book. The device was able to remember street address but the user had so many in it that he couldn't remember whose address was whose. And although the Bluetooth worked well, it didn't automatically reconnect when he went to use it again.

Bottom Line

The Sony NV-U94T is a good product for the price. If you have to store lots of addresses and names you may want to look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for clear visual information on roads and highways, this product does a great job.
