Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman Jacket Review

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman Jacket Review
Made from what Mountain Hardwear calls Monkey Phur, i.e. long fleece, this jacket sheds cold and wind--more like polar bear fur. This fleece jacket is 100% polyester, weighs 15 ounces, has a DWR finish and is reversible. Mountain Hardwear claims that wearing the jacket with the smooth side out and fuzzy side in will increase its warmth and wicking ability under a shell. Finding this jacket warm enough on its own, we have not yet tested this feature but will on our next ski trip.

Perks

The flattering cut tapers just above the waist while flaring modestly at the hips. This jacket is as soft as a baby's blanket, the zipper does not snag, and the elastic waist band is snug enough to keep out the wind while not bunching or riding up. It is comfortable and flattering, all while keeping the wearer warm and toasty.

Sacrifices

The only problem with the jacket is that the Monkey Phur comes off on everything. Although washing the jackets twice helps, wearing the black jacket with a light-colored shirt is a disaster. Mountain Hardwear states that there have not been enough complaints to warrant changing the material. The jacket's shedding might limit your wardrobe choices.

Bottom Line

The Monkey Woman Jacket is a good buy at about $140. The soft fleece keeps the wind off and compliments your figure on cold trail days or breezy walks from the parking lot. Just remember to pack a lint roller.
