Review of Mio GPS Systems

Review of Mio GPS Systems
Mio was founded in 2002 and is based in Taiwan. In just a few years, Mio was quickly recognized as one of the leaders in the GPS business, winning awards and recommendations from travel magazines and websites all over the world. Its American product base is only oriented toward vehicle-based GPS, and it does not offer any hand-held devices as of November 2009. All Mio GPS systems sold in the United States come pre-loaded with maps of North America and are ready to go out of the box, including text-to-voice features in three languages.

Perks

Mio's quality is widely regarded and its Moov series of car global positioning systems, with digital screens ranging from 3 1/2 inches to 4.7 inches. Several models incorporate Mio's innovative Mio Spirit interface, utilizing a touch-screen navigation that makes finding destinations and plotting a journey a snap. The more advanced models also come pre-loaded with millions of pre-loaded points of interest.

Sacrifices

Mio's lack of offerings in the hiking and hand-held arenas is disappointing. It offers a wide range of these products in other countries, which can be adapted for use in the United States with the appropriate maps, but this is a serious drawback in its marketability and usefulness.

Bottom Line

Mio offers an excellent product in a range of prices so even the most budget-minded traveler can find an appropriate model. Its lack of hiking and hand-held models is disappointing, but if you're looking for a car GPS from a responsible company, Mio is a great choice.
