Perks
The SIII series offers manageable, compact size and weight. Appropriate for safari trips, camping and bird viewing, the SIII series waterproof design and antireflective coatings give users good visual clarity through foggy, rainy or bright and dry conditions. The SIII makes focusing easy with just one, large focusing knob to manipulate.
Sacrifices
The major concern for most users will be the price. As of November 1, 2009, the SIII 10x42 series is listed at $419.95. As with all roof prism type binoculars, vision quality is sacrificed for compact design, unlike porro prism binoculars. Also, there are no protective rubber caps around the lenses. Although the lenses are multicoated, the absence of caps allows glare to penetrate into the field of vision slightly.
Bottom Line
For backcountry applications, the SIII series offers a competitive option for those seeking a compact binocular design if price is not a major concern.
