Review of the Redington Rs3 Fly Rod

Redington's Rs3 fly rods are smooth casting rods that cover a wide range of applications. These rods range in lengths from 8 to 14 feet and can handle fly lines from a 3 weight to a 12 weight. Rs3 fly rods are available in both two- and four-piece configurations to accommodate the discerning tastes of fly-fishing anglers. Each rod is built out of high modulus graphite blanks, which provides a light-weight rod with plenty of power, and offers three different-style handles for the fly angler to choose from. Suggested pricing in 2009 is from $169 to $349.

Perks

The Rs3 line of rods come with burl wood reel seat on the freshwater models while the saltwater models have an anodized aluminum reel seat. These burgundy-colored rods come with silver trim and comfortable high-grade cork handles. The guide layout on these rods works well for shooting long casts.

Sacrifices

While the wooden reel seats offer a handsome finish to the Rs3 fly rods, they do not lock down the fly reel securely. The fighting butt on the 9- and 10-weight rods is too short; this does not provide enough leverage when fighting large fish.

Bottom Line

The Rs3 fly rods from Redington are easy to fly cast and fish with all day. With all the models available, there is an Rs3 to suit the needs of virtually any fly-fishing application.
