shiny side up
from REI website: Footprints typically have a shiny (coated) side and dull (uncoated) side. You should place the dull side on the ground (shiny side facing up) in order to minimize abrasion on the coating. Also read on another review that good trick is to take grommet from footprint and wrap up and over grommit of tent...so when putting pole in grommits it goes thru footprint grommit first and tent grommit second...that way footprint is attached to tent and can move it around easier as one unit together

Which is the coated side?
This is a great, lightweight footprint - a must have for the HD 2 Plus. However, I just wish the instructions were more clear. The instructions say to place the footprint "coated side up". Upon inspection, it's difficult to determine which is the coated side. Is it the tacky side with a rubbery coating, or is it the smooth side? Would it have been so difficult to print "this side up" or "this side down" on the footprint or give it some other distinguishing characteristic? So, other than poor instructions, the product is great.

Great Companion for my tent
I would highly recommend purchasing the footprint for the REI Half Dome Plus tent. It fits perfect, and it easy to set up. You can also use it with just the fly for a super lightweight setup if needed.
