One minor change & they would be 5 stars
At 50 yrs young a little more coverage is great on the legs, and these are perfect for that. Comfortable, great fit and they even look good. These shorts would be a 5 if the pocket in the waist band was bigger, it barely fits a key and just won't fit a cell phone. If it was big enough to accommodate a cell phone the size of an iPhone, they would be perfect an I would rate them 5 stars.

Comfortable and supportive
I bought these shorts as a replacement for a pair of North Face running pants (mid calf). I hate the 1" inseam in so many of the ladies running shorts so I'm stuck with the longer spandex versions. I loved the North Face pair but they seemed to lose elasticity too soon. The REI brand have held up much better.

So many shorts do NOT have a drawstring which I really like so the shorts don't crawl down as I run.

For runner with larger thighs
I am a runner with larger thighs and I spent a LOT of time looking for the right pair of shorts that would prevent chaffing, would not ride up, would be comfortable despite hot/humid weather, and were flattering. At least 5 pairs failed before I found these. The knee length prevents the "mid-thigh bulge" that you can get with shorter compression shorts. While they are not truly wicking, they breathed relatively well during a recent 5 mi run in 90+ degree heat. I'm going back for a second pair (but sadly, they're back-ordered).
