Since 1986 Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) has worked to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. What started with less than 250 miles on the ground has now grown to nearly 19,500 miles of open rail-trail, forming the backbone of a growing trail system across the United States.
