Awesome kid's bike!
This is the best bike you can buy your kid. It has an awesome suspension fork, so your kid can do dirt jumps and ride hard trails. The Geometry is spot-on, so your kid can have a nice stable ride. I have had this bike since I was 9, and I'm 13 now. I still use it, though, and i can still rock the trails and the jumps with it.

Great option to step up to mt. biking.
I had been looking for a mountain bike for my 8 year old so he can start doing some trail rides with me. Options in the market for a 24" (wheels) bike are pretty limited and HEAVY. So limited that I almost bought and X-Small 26" frame to build up with 24" wheels. Fortunately for me I was browsing at REI and saw one of these on the floor. Great Bike for Kids and Great Value
We own three 24" kids bikes (4 kids)and are always upgrading. I tried the Ponderosa because the Scott Scale JR and RC were unavailable--and find the Ponderosa to be an amazing value. The bike is the lightest carried by REI, actually weighs 25.5 w/o pedals, and has better components than many adult more-expensive bikes (e.g. Kenda Small Block 8 tires). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. (Note: We originally tried it because it was in the REI 20% off sale--but now would buy it again at full [$] price.
