Expected a Lil More
I bought these before heading up Mt Washington. The draw that I had for them was the light weight of the shoes, as well as the pull cord lace. Upon wearing them for the rest of the day, my feet warmed up and began to sweat just by wearing them. I also noticed that the elastic on the heel/Achilles was just too loose and my foot could easily slip out. On the day of the hike, they faired well on the way up and provided much traction. However, the pull cord had to be pulled so tight just to keep them on. On the way down the mountain, the balls of my feet heated up quickly despite applying as much force to the heels to prevent blisters. By the end of the trip, the rubber that curls up the toes was starting to peel back a little bit on both shoes. I plan on taking them back and finding better shoes.

Very versatile and comfortable
Very comfortable all around shoe, and so far has held up to a beating quite well. Love the quicklace for everyday use - slip on/off. However, when I'm hiking up steep hills, the stretch allows the shoe to pull away from my heel.

Great Hiking Shoes!
I loved these shoes. I hiked for over 150 miles in the Santa Monica mountains over a 2 week period and my feet felt great.

Ups and Downs
When I first got the shoes I loved them. They were relatively light compared to my previous hiking/daily shoe. I know there are lighter shoes out there, but I enjoyed them. They are comfortable. I have had these almost two years and the bottoms are still in ok shape. Price is ok. My two biggest issues with them are how the heel wear

A great day hike shoe
A great shoe for day hikes and walks. You can feel rocks a bit, but they do not bother you much. I wouldn't use it for backpacking, but it's great for shorter duration hikes.

have they improved over the 3?
I got the version 3 last summer as a gift from my wife (yes at rei!). I love the comfort and ease of these shoes. The only issue I had was with the sole detaching from the toe. It peels back and did it on both shoes. I have used gorilla glue to repair it every 2-3 months. This started about 60 days into owning them, with little to no wear at the time. I would be buying the new version immediately if I knew this was corrected. I spent 90 days corresponding with Merrell last year but grew tired of waiting on responses. Please post if you find the sole to be sturdy on the front of the toe!
