Sitting where the River Ness meets the North Sea, Inverness is the most important city of the Scottish Highlands. The city itself offers fishing and plenty of scenic day hikes, but as the kind of place where Scottish Gaelic appears on road signs, it is also the natural gateway for expeditions into the Highlands as the outer Scottish isles. As a well-trafficked tourist stop, the city offers a number of fine hotels, many of which are set in great old houses.

Rocpool Reserve Hotel

This five-star hotel won Conde Nast Traveler's designation as the "Most Excellent UK City Hotel" for 2008. It is in the Inverness city center, just a few minutes from the castle or the train station, and almost within sight of the River Ness. Each room has a 30-inch flat screen TV, DVD player and stereo with iPod dock. The hotel has its own bar, and the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner.

Best Western Lochardil House Hotel

The Scottish Tourist Board rates this Best Western as a four-star. The hotel is set in a one-time mansion, built in 1876 by an area Member of Parliament. If you are looking to make your stay in Inverness a tranquil one, this is the place for you. The mansion and its grounds are lovely, and the semi-suburban setting is just far enough from the city center to be quiet without being inconvenient. It is a small, cozy hotel with only 26 rooms. The hotel has its own restaurant, as well as a bar with traditional leather seats. Free WiFi is available throughout the hotel.

Kingsmills Hotel

This four-star's core is a manor house dating to 1786, and it sits a mile from the city center. Owners take pride in their big rooms, all of which have free WiFi access. The hotel has an indoor swimming pool, spa with sauna and steam room, and a fitness center. The hotel has its own restaurant, which in addition to lunch and dinner does a Sunday brunch.

Culloden House

This manor turned hotel was the headquarters for Bonnie Prince Charlie prior to leading his army in to its decisive defeat and the end of the Jacobite Rebellion against England at Culloden Moor in 1746. Sitting on 40 acres of manicured lawns, wood lots and gardens, the place perfectly fits the popular imagination of the estate of an eighteenth century British lord. Travel and Leisure ranked it as one of the Best Hotels in the World, and it sits on Conde Nast's Gold List. Most of the 28 rooms are appointed with classic touches like marble fireplaces and crystal chandeliers. There is a restaurant and a library bar with 120 malt whiskeys on the shelves, as well as a fitness center and tennis court. The sauna is located in the house's dungeon.
