Things to Do in Montego, Jamaica

Things to Do in Montego, Jamaica
Conveniently located between Negril and Ocho Rios, Montego Bay is considered by some as the capital of tourism in Jamaica. Visitors to Montego Bay (known affectionately as MoBay) will find numerous things to do along the beautiful white sand beaches. If you enjoy exploring the water, consider going scuba diving or snorkeling and investigate the many reefs and caverns that make the area famous. Whatever you choose to do, you are sure to find plenty to keep you busy on your visit.

Dolphins

If you have ever wanted the opportunity to swim and interact with dolphins, visit Dolphin Cove at Half Moon resort. At Dolphin Cove, participants get to talk to the trainers that work with the dolphins, and learn about dolphin behavior. Then they get to don life jackets and actually interact with the dolphins. The resort offers a variety of experiences, ranging from the "beach encounter" which consists of participants standing in waist deep water to touch the dolphins, all the way to the ultimate "trainer for a day" experience. The trainer for a day experience allows participants to follow a dolphin trainer and swim with the dolphins, help prepare the dolphin's food and all of the other chores that Dolphin Cove's trainers do on an average day.

Horse Riding

Another unique experience for visitors to the Half Moon resort at Montego Bay is horse riding on the beach. At the Half Moon Equestrian Center, visitors can take part in a guided ride along the beautiful bay. If that isn't enough, you also get the opportunity to take a dip in the bay along with your horse. If you're new to horse riding, the Equestrian Center also offers beginner horse-riding lessons. If you are an advanced horse rider, consider taking part in polo lessons or jumping.

Scuba Diving

Montego Bay, with its crystal clear, turquoise waters, is an ideal location for scuba divers. It has a marine park, which stretches from the airport all the way to Great River, offering a variety of different dives. Popular dives include the Cayman-Trench, a wall with a depth, which exceeds 1500 feet straight into the ocean. Chubb Reef is another popular location. At just 40 feet, it is a great beginner site. Look out for parrotfish and large schools of Bermuda chubb. Dive Seaworld Resorts is one popular PADI dive center located at the Cariblue Beach Hotel. The company offers certification programs, snorkeling, night dives and deep-water dives going to a variety of locations, including the Cayman-Trench Wall.
