Cheap Hostels in Monreale, Italy

Cheap Hostels in Monreale, Italy

Stephan Christophe

Located on the famous tropical island of Sicily, Monreale is a popular destination for those travelers seeking to visit Palermo, yet stay outside the bustling capital's center. Sporting a wide array of hotels and the more expensive bed and breakfasts, Monreale's hostel selection is slim to nonexistent. For backpackers and budget travelers in search of the best dorm-style deals in the region, a small trip into the outer neighborhoods of Palermo--- a mere three-to-five minutes by train--- can save you ninety euro a night compared to the local tourist "alberghi".

Ai Quattro Canti

Easily the cheapest option, the Ai Quattro Canti puts travelers up for 15 euros an evening at mid-season prices and remains affordable even during the summer months, hovering near 25 euros in the high season. Though requiring a quick trip on the train, the Ai Quattro Canti offers a free continental breakfast, free car parking (for those intrepid travelers driving the Sicilian coasts), and perhaps best of all, free kitchen facilities for anyone wanting to save a few dozen euros each meal by eating in. Located only a five minute walk from the train station, as well as a short walk to all the museums, theaters and cafes of Palermo, Ai Quattro Canti seems to put forth the best of both worlds--and there's even a babysitter on staff.

Hostel Firenze

Next up in price, though not necessarily a significant step in facilities provided, the Hostel Firenze averages 18 euros for its four and three-bed dorms, with a 25 euro per-person rate on privates. Boasting its self-acclaimed status as the "first youth hostel in Palermo," the Hostel Firenze provides free linens, Wi-Fi and Internet-ready computers, as well as a built-in bar and café for those travelers wanting to socialize. Include the free parking and recently refurnished "classic-style" rooms, and it's easy to see why most weekends at Hostel Firenze are booked well in advance. For those interested in meeting other travelers (the Hostel fills over sixty beds each evening) and can spare the extra euros for close-by pub, the Hostel Firenze offers a good option.

Casa di Amici

The Casa di Amici ranks in as yet another slightly more expensive option. Though still spendthrift by hotel standards, the hostel offers 20 euro beds for its dormitory-rooms and, unlike most hostels, includes wireless Internet access that reaches your bedroom. Included in the amenities are the guest kitchen, free breakfast, included linens, twenty-four hour security, laundry facilities, bicycle hire, parking, twenty-four hour reception and, what else? DVD's available to rent and watch for those nights of recuperating from the sun's rays. The Casa di Amici includes a wide array of services that may make the extra 5 euros seem not such a splurge in hindsight.
