Russian Tea Room
Decorated in an opulence of hardwoods, leathers and velvet, the Russian Tea Room has been an NYC institution since 1927. Popular with writers and artists during the 1930s and 1940s, it eventually became a place reserved for the rich and famous, as the populace could simply not afford their prices. While the name may suggest this is just a place for tea, that's far from true. Lunch, brunch, dinner and pre- and post-theater fare are served here, with exuberant dishes that include a variety of expensive caviars (imperial Iranian osetra, for example, sells for almost $300 for an ounce), traditional Russian food (like vareniki and pelmeni) and vodka.
If dinner and lunch prices are a little too much, stop by here in the midafternoon, after a quick stroll in the park, for high tea. This all-out event includes sandwiches (salmon, shrimp and Roquefort cheese are just some of the options), blinis (Russian pancakes) and a choice of loose-leaf teas that include mint verbena, South African rooibos chai and Indian Darjeeling. The whole package costs $50, or add a glass of champagne for an extra $25.

Tavern on the Green
Tavern on the Green is probably NYC's best-known restaurant. It attracts both tourists and high-profile locals. Tavern offers eight pre-set menus that vary from the simple (and affordable) to sophisticated, as well as a children's menu, a pre-theater menu and an impressive list of wines and cocktails. There's a $30 brunch on Sundays if you want to try a few dishes without breaking the bank.
An outdoor seating area, decorated with Christmas lights, is the best option in the summer. During winter, request one of the tables against the windows for better views of the snow-covered garden. Inside, the restaurant features mirrored walls, giant crystal chandeliers, gilded décor and even a gift shop. While the food here is good and includes classics such as prime rib and New York steak, the restaurant is most famous for its location and for being the favorite of names like Grace Kelly. A popular spot for weddings, this is a place best enjoyed with a loved one by your side.

Le Cirque
Renovated in 2006, Le Cirque offers a decadent atmosphere, where fashion, rich foods and extravagant décor are all part of the charm. The 16,000-foot restaurant (a giant by NYC standards) focuses on French cuisine, offering dishes like halibut poached in coconut milk, corn and basil soup, and lemon gnocchi. For those who want faster and cheaper service, there's also a cafe menu, which offers more simple fare, including cheese ravioli, mini cheeseburgers and heirloom tomato salad.
