What to Wear on a Tropical Vacation

What to Wear on a Tropical Vacation
Characterized for their high temperatures, tropical regions are great locations for swimming, diving, kayaking and camping. While recreational activities like hiking require specific gear and clothing considerations, other tropical activities are less restrictive and generally only require travelers to worry about temperatures when choosing what to wear.

Main Wear

Dress up basic items like white and off-white camisoles, shirts, capris, shorts, skirts and slacks with natural beads and scarves in bright hues like yellow and blue. For a regional effect, add shell jewelry when spending the day at the beach or touring a coastal town in the tropics.

Swimwear

Women can complement bathing suits with a sarong, sun hat or loose-fitting long-sleeve white top. Opt for bright colors and tropical patterns including exotic birds, neon fish and bundles of flowers. Men can add a tropical touch when kayaking or diving with brightly colored swimming trunks. Other accessories include a tropical-themed beach towel or gold-rimmed sunglasses, which offer a great splash of color to white or off-white swimwear.

Recreational Activities

For a day of hiking, opt for light layers that protect the skin from harsh UV and UVB rays while still adhering to a tropical theme. Choose loose-fitting clothing when participating in walking tours or picnicking in the afternoon to avoid excessive sun exposure; however, stick to standard gear when hiking and diving. Instead of adding loose-fitting layers that could snag or become tangled, opt for large hats, added sunscreen and sunglasses to protect against sun exposure.

Dressing for Cooler Temperatures at Night

Rely on casual wear when camping at night or taking a city tour, and complement your overall look with local pieces. For a casual look, use local belts, beads and scarves, and for a dressier look add local jewelry, flowers, which can adorn the hair, and light sweaters or tops.

Footwear

Use standard hiking boots when hiking and sandals when enjoying time at the beach. Opt for walking sandals as well as beach sandals. Flip-flops can also be worn at the beach and are usually available in a range of colors and patterns.
