Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America. Situated on the border between Canada and the United States, the thundering falls create a natural divide between the two countries. Tourists on the Canadian side of the falls will find a number of enjoyable outdoor activities in Niagara, Ontario.

Heartland Forest

Visit Heartland Forest for a relaxing break from the tourist crowds in the center of Niagara. Located just 5 minutes from Niagara Falls, Heartland Forest consists of 93 acres of woods, green space and trails. Hike the multiple trails at Heartland Forest, and keep an eye out for wild turkeys and other local animals. There is also a large tree-house in the middle of the park where kids can play. Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash. Heartland Forest is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission.

Journey Behind the Falls

Journey Behind the Falls is a special tour that takes visitors beneath the cascading Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Experience the mighty Horseshoe Falls from up close, hiking through more than 650 feet of tunnels to the observation deck beneath the thundering water. Rain gear is included in the price of admission, and visitors have the option of renting audio-guide technology as they tour the misty caverns of Horseshoe Falls.

Niagara Falls Aviary

Bird lovers will enjoy the Niagara Falls Aviary, the largest indoor free-flying aviary in the world. More than 80 species of birds roam this natural habitat, and guests can interact up close with the birds while touring the aviary. Cups of nectar are available for purchase as a fun way for kids to attract birds to the palms of their hands. Part of the aviary also features a rain-forest environment with 35-foot tall amazonian trees and a waterfall.
