The Best Hotels for Lovers in Pismo Beach, California

John Nyberg/sxc.hu

When it comes to lodging options, lovers have it made in Pismo Beach. Set on a sweeping arc of coastline above intermittent cliffs in the Central Coast of California, Pismo Beach is ideally situated to allow exploration of both the sea and inland highlights. Surrounded by rolling hills and old oak trees, visitors will find wineries, single-track trails, stables and numerous water sports to choose from.

Cottage Inn by the Sea

Located just north of Pismo State Beach, the Cottage Inn by the Sea is an American hotel with English country sensibilities. Charmingly designed inside and out to resemble an establishment one is more likely to see in the lake district of England than along the shores of Pismo Beach, visitors can warm themselves by a fireplace in any of the inn's 80 rooms during cold evenings or chilly winters. In case the thought of leaving Fido at home alone is an unpleasant one, the inn has a limited number of pet-friendly options. Also, nearby Pismo State Beach offers opportunities to hike, swim or catch a glimpse of the numerous birds that call the area home.

The Cliffs Resort

Although almost every hotel in Pismo Beach sits on the water front, not many are perched on their own private cliff. Renovated in 2009, the Cliffs Resort is large with 165 suites and rooms, but it compensates for this with luxury amenities. A favorite location for ocean side weddings, the hotel offers body treatments, facials, skin soothers and massages at the Cliffs Spa. There is fine dining with a view inside Marisol at the Cliffs.

Pismo Beach Hotel

One of the best alternatives to the oceanfront hotels, the Pismo Beach Hotel is a small, remodeled historic inn. Resembling something closer to a Manhattan tenement building than a beach hotel, the Pismo Beach Hotel is famous as the temporary home in 1937 of Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis and Clark Gable during the filming of "Strange Cargo". Rooms tend to have the feel of small, or large, apartments with simple, comfortable pine furnishings, dark fabrics and uncluttered walls. A plus here is that many rooms come with full kitchens, including gas burning stoves. They are ideal for those looking to have a home away from home while saving on dining expenses. A quaint, brick courtyard and hotel-front arches make the building stand out warmly.
