Make Reservations Early
When it comes to popular destinations that people frequent, there is no such thing as too early. Many people prefer to travel around the holidays and these particular times of year are typically higher in cost and can be booked in advance as far as six months to a year before the holiday. It is a good idea to check with the location that you are interested in and reserve your rental as soon as possible.
It is becoming increasingly common for many vacation rental companies and home owners to require the full payment for your stay in advance. Before you put any money on the line, be sure to read the terms and conditions of the contract, particularly about refunds if an accident or injury prevents you from traveling at the time requested.
Ask About Your Pet
For most pet lovers, the idea of taking a vacation without their dog or cat simply doesn't cross their mind. Many vacation rental home owners are pet owners themselves and realize that a family pet is like an extension of the family to many people and they allow pets into the rental home. It is always a good idea to ask first though because there may be a size limit or a pet type specification.
Even if the rental home does not specify, go ahead and ask if your particular type of pet is welcome. You may be surprised to find that the owner or company will allow a bird, cat or other small pet to come to the vacation rental home for a small additional fee.
Choose the Right Type of Home
There is no question that renting a home lets you garner more space to relax and puts you in more privacy than a hotel or motel. Many different kinds of homes are on the market however, and you need to do your homework to make sure that you choose the right type. Choosing a home that is elegant but filled with valuables won't be the best choice for your toddler who likes to touch everything or your cat who simply must climb.
Take the time to look at pictures and read the descriptions of vacation rental homes you may be interested in. Some homes may actually say in the write up that they are "kid-proof" and "pet-friendly". Remember, you are going on a vacation and you don't want to spend your entire time policing.
