Fun Things to Do in Galena, Illinois
Located near the Iowa border in Illinois' northwest corner, Galena offers visitors a quaint, small-town experience in one of the state's most beautiful areas. Surrounded by rolling hills, Galena's idyllic mid-western landscapes, dotted by farm houses, brings to mind the painting's of Grant Wood and songs of Woody Guthrie. Galena's historic downtown offers guests a look into the past, yet is strikingly modern with its many boutique shops and restaurants.

The Mississippi River

The mightiest of American rivers is only three miles west of downtown Galena. Visitors can fish, take a scenic boat tour, rent canoes and kayaks, hike, and observe wildlife including bald eagles and migratory birds. The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is just across the river in nearby Dubuque, Iowa. The museum features aquariums with live animals and interactive exhibits about the river's history, geology, and wildlife.

Wineyards

Illinois is typical not the first place thought of when it comes to wine, but in recent years wineries have begun popping up throughout the Land of Lincoln. Galena and the surrounding area have three wineries, where visitors can tour, taste, and purchase regional wines. Every March, Galena is host of the annual Wine Lovers' Weekend. Visitors can sample more than 300 local and international wines, enjoy an equisite meal, and auction on vintage wines.

Apple River Canyon State Park

Twenty miles east of Galena visitors find the beautiful Apple River Canyon State Park. Covering almost 300 acres, the park's landscape is filled with limestone bluffs, hilly forests, and the Apple River. Wildlife is in abundance; while hiking the park's numerous paths, visitors can catch of a glimpse of deer, eagles, and migratory birds. Wildflowers decorate the park's ravines and open spaces. The park allows for camping, fishing, hunting, and picnicking.
