Things to Do in Surfside Beach

Things to Do in Surfside Beach
Surfside Beach, South Carolina is a great place to visit. Located right on the Atlantic Ocean, just a few miles south of Myrtle Beach, there are many activities for families, singles, teenagers or groups. There are many restaurants within driving distance, and many opportunities for shopping as well as two amusement parks, piers, boat rentals and sports to keep you occupied until it is time for you to reluctantly leave.

Sporting Activities

Except for shopping and eating, most everything you do at the beach is outside. Surfside Beach is no different. For those that enjoy sports, it is located within driving distance of close to 100 golf courses with varying degrees of difficulty. Charter boats can be hired to take you out for a day of sportfishing or rental equipment is available at the piers for surf or peer fishing. There is no license requirement for peer fishing, however a new South Carolina law imposed in 2009 does require a license for surf fishing. Although surfing is a sport, you will not find much opportunity to do it in the Atlantic Ocean. Body surfing is the next best thing, and you can find the short boards needed to do this at many retail locations.

Camping

If hotels in the area are full or you don't feel like paying the higher costs, camping is available in Surfside Beach. There are many campgrounds that allow RVs, as well as tents depending on your needs. These campgrounds have activities for kids, amenities, such as pools and basketball courts, entertainment on certain nights, and easy access to the beach. If these types of campgrounds seem a bit too chaotic for your taste, Myrtle Beach State Park is just up the road to the north a couple of miles. The state park has its own pier and has an area for horses so that you can bring them along. Campgrounds in Surfside include Pirateland, Ocean Lakes and Lakewood.

The Beach

The beach, of course, is the reason you come to the coast. There are many access points that allow you to get to the sand and water where you can soak in some rays, take a walk, play in the ocean, or search for seashells. There are rental locations where you can check out an ocean kayak, or if new to the sport, take a lesson in technique. One place close by to rent your kayak is Shoreline Watersports right in Surfside.
