Many times the only way to get where you want to go is by flying; this is especially true for outdoors enthusiasts. Great climbing, camping and hiking are not always in your backyard; a quick flight can save time for the better things in life. The following list of American domestic airlines will help you plan your trip to anywhere in the United States and abroad.

American Airlines

American Airlines' main operating hub is at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, but also has hubs at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Miami International Airport. It is also a member of the Oneworld Alliance. American serves over 250 cities throughout the United States and worldwide, including Latin America, Europe and China. Depending on the destination and length of flight, meals and drinks are served for either free or a small cost. All checked baggage costs extra.

United Airlines

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is United Airlines' main hub, with other hubs in Denver, L.A., San Francisco and Washington, D.C. United is a member of the Star Alliance, and flies to destinations throughout the United States as well as 24 other countries in Europe, Asia and Australia. Checking bags costs a fee; a special discount is offered if done online. United serves complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Longer flights have the option of purchasing an on-board meal. International flights receive a free meal.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is a domestic discount carrier with its main hub at Love Field airport in Dallas. Southwest's over 3,000 daily flights serve major airports throughout the United States in 68 cities, including Las Vegas, Denver, New Orleans and Nashville. Southwest offers its passengers complimentary drinks (non-alcoholic) and snacks on board every flight. Southwest's baggage policy allows for two checked bags at no cost; overweight and additional bags accrue a fee.

US Airways

US Airways operates hubs in the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It is a member of the Star Alliance. US Airways flies to over 140 destinations throughout the country and abroad, including the Middle East, Europe and Central America. On all flights, non-alcoholic drinks are free. On international flights, both a meal and drinks are served at no cost; meals can be purchased on other flights. A small fee is charged per checked bag; an Internet discount is offered for checking bags online.

Delta

With its main hub in Atlanta, Delta also operates large hubs in Cincinnati, JFK and Salt Lake City. Delta flies to over 370 destinations in almost 90 countries on six continents, including Africa (the only major domestic carrier to do so). Delta is a member of the Skyteam Alliance. Free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are served on board, and meals can be purchased; wireless Internet is available on certain flights. Passengers must pay for all checked baggage (Internet discount available).
