Monte Verde Park
Grab your sunhat, and head outdoors. Monte Verde Park is a 4-acre Lakewood park located along the West San Gabriel River. Home to a 3,000-foot newly renovated (as of 2001) lodging structure, S. Mark Taper Foundation Vista Lodge, Monte Verde Park offers a quarter-mile-long nature trail. Visitors to the park can enjoy a trek through several ecosystems or overnight camping, summer vacation day camp programs and special recreation classes, according to the Lakewood City website.

Civic Center Block Party
Load the picnic basket with snacks, and head over the Lakewood Civic Center Block Party and Fireworks Extravaganza for Fourth of July weekend. An annual event, the block party offers music, games and food. Open to kids and adults, the Funky Hippeez stage, the central fixture of the extravaganza, showcases a diverse group of performers. Beginning at 5 p.m. and ending around 9 p.m., this half-day event provides travelers with an opportunity to taste food from local Lakewood restaurants. The event ends with fireworks over the Lakewood Center Mall.
