Things to Do in NYC for Lunch

Things to Do in NYC for Lunch

Jana Stiller/sxc.hu

New York City at lunchtime is a busy place. Sort of like recess for adults, tourists are often amazed at how over the course of a one-hour lunch time the city is taken over by Manhattan workers on break. Whether looking to rub elbows with residents on the streets or seeking refuge in a quieter location, there is much to occupy yourself with during the lunch hour in New York.

Quik Meal

Grab a bite on the run from Quik Meal in midtown Manhattan. Tourists are on the go. When in New York for a few days, it is not always easy to find time to sit down and stuff your gullet properly in between visits to Times Square, Grand Central Station and Fifth Avenue. Fortunately, Muhammed Rahman, a former employee at the Russian Tea Room, has come to the rescue with fresh, delicious and cheap meals at his streetside food cart. Quik Meal specialties include lamb pita, veggie pita, falafel and chicken schwarma. Don't be intimidated by all the people in business attire who pass by as you stuff your face--every employee in the area knows about Quik Meal.

Boat Tour

Board the Circle Line for lunchtime tour circumnavigating Manhattan. The Circle Line has been departing from Pier 83 in midtown since 1955 and offers visitors views of the city that most never get to see. Stop off at the corner deli on the way to the pier, order your favorite sandwich, sides and drink and munch happily on the ship deck under the sunshine. The Circle Line runs year-round and during the winter guests can stay warm inside the main cabin of the boat. Especially worth seeing are the cliff-side views along the Hudson River near the George Washington Bridge.

Farmer's Market

Rather than heading to the nearest restaurant and sitting indoors under air conditioning, head to the Union Square Greenmarket. Union Square is a focal point in the city for both locals and visitors. Every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, regional farmers load up their vehicles with fruits, vegetables, dairy products, cheeses, cakes and cookies and head down to the big city to sell their goods. Created specifically to give small family farmers a fighting chance, the Greenmarket is quite popular and the surrounding park makes for the perfect spot for an urban picnic.
