The Best Mud Mountain Bike Tires

The Best Mud Mountain Bike Tires

Mariano Arriaga: sxc.hu

Riding a mountain bike through mud requires different tires. When caked with wet soil, bike tires will lose their grip and load forks and chain stays with mud, slowing a rider's speed and increasing the exertion required to keep up with the pack. The best mud tires increase traction through wider channels between knobs and grooves, allowing debris to pass through quickly.

Vertical 2.3

Mud womp with the best of them when using Continental's Vertical 2.3" tire. Designed for front and rear wheel usage, this tire is surprisingly light (600 grams) for a wide tire and features Kevlar beading with DuraSkin sidewall reinforcement (DuraSkin is a patented polyamide layer used to strengthen the side of tires). These tires are large enough for riders to keep air pressure low for better traction while maintaining enough air to prevent flats due to tube pinching. Tall standing, well spaced semi-nubs on the tire surface mean this tire is a quick roller. The Vertical 2.3" is ideal for single-track rides, long distance, enduro-type rides and downhill use. For those who live in areas where the weather fluctuates often, the Vertical 2.3" is an appropriate all-around tire option.

Nevegal 2.1

Cut through the muddy goop before the rider beside you covers you in road jam with Kenda's Nevegal 2.1" tire. The Nevegal 2.1" is designed with a rubber compound, known as Stick E, that slowly rebounds, acting as a form of suspension and allowing the tire tread to more tightly grip the road. Sold in inflatable and tubeless forms, the Nevegal weighs in at 664 grams and is part of signature series devoted to John Tomac, a multiple-championship racer. Ideal for ascents and descents in wet conditions, the Nevegal 2.1" features a two-ply construction, and huge spaces between tall knobs. Outer knobs are particularly long and help ensure grip in tight turning situations.

Muddy Mary 2.35

Launch into that dizzyingly steep downhill course with a tire meant to take the abuse. The Schwalbe Muddy Mary 2.35" is built for technical, high-speed situations involving oozing mud. Built to take a pounding, the Muddy Mary weighs in at 1,150 grams but is a necessity for this punishing type of riding. Sidewalls are constructed of light but sturdy SnakeSkin-patterned compound while Schwalbe's Triple Compound is designed to lend further durability, cornering grip, mud-flinging and easy rolling. It should be noted that these tires are huge and as a result tire pressure can be dropped lower than normal. Muddy Mary tire knobs are of the large, lima bean variety and will leave riders feeling unstable on anything other than mud.
