Christchurch, New Zealand's Garden City, is on the east coast of the South Island. These apartment accommodations, which overlook the scenic Avon River, are an excellent choice for self-sufficient travelers. The 27 units offer one or two bedrooms, as well as full kitchen facilities. The hotel also offers the Oasis Restaurant and Bar, which offers all three meals, including a full bar, with a view of the river. The Avon is a peaceful river as it moves through Christchurch and is excellent for kayaking and fishing. You also can punt on the river, which involves pushing a low, flat boat through the water with a pole.

Hadleigh Boutique Lodge

The Hadleigh Boutique Lodge was voted one of the country's top five lodges in 2008 by New Zealand Travel clients. The lodge offers extensive gardens and was built in 1904. It is listed on the national Historical Places Trust. The lodge operators were awarded for their meticulous restoration of the building's 100-year-old Arts and Crafts architecture. Hadleigh offers a few suites, each with five-star amenities and named for local places and luminaries. The lodge does not offer a full-service restaurant but offers breakfast and a daily happy hour for guests. Your hosts are happy to book a number of excursions for you, including whale watching, high-speed jet boat tours or hot-air ballooning.

Bealey's Hotel

Just a 15-minute walk from the Christchurch city center, Bealey's Hotel offers traditional kiwi hospitality, with 66 rooms at reasonable rates. Each room offers basic amenities including satellite television and wireless Internet. Family rooms and shared rooms are available for larger groups, and there is a classic New Zealand alehouse on-site. Bealey's Hotel is ideal for backpackers and casual travelers who plan to spend their time exploring all Christchurch has to offer. Just a few blocks to the west is North Hagley Park, one of Christchurch's largest public parks, which offers paths for cycling and wandering, a picturesque pond, and lots of open spaces which are often the sites of local pickup games of soccer or rugby.
