Poverty Point Reservoir State Park
Poverty Point Reservoir is a 2,700-acre man-made lake that features fishing for largemouth bass, black crappie, blue gill and channel catfish. The park is located within the Mississippi Flyway for many bird species including cormorants, ducks, geese and pelicans. The eastern edge of the park is an active black bear habitat. There is a half-mile walking trail, and camping amenities include both cabins and campsites. Eight deluxe cabins and four standard lodges sleep eight to 10 people. Nine improved camp sites feature water and electrical hookups, and 45 premium camp sites offer sewage hookup in addition to water and electricity. The park is located close to the Poverty Point State Historic Site, a complex array of mounds and ridges that overlook the Mississippi flood plain. Dated to between 1650 and 700 B.C. the complex was built by a pre-agricultural Native American society, and stone tools found at the site have been traced back to rock quarried from as far away as Ohio River Valley.
