Alaska Vacation Activities

Chances are you are not going to Alaska for the shopping malls and Broadway plays, but for a big, hearty taste of the Last Frontier. The only way to enjoy it fully is with a load of outdoor and exciting activities. The main problem you're going to encounter, however, is trying to find enough time and energy to do them all.

Denali State Park

Home to the stately Mount McKinley, this South central Alaskan park is ideal for hiking, hiking, hiking. Trails of all types and sizes beckon the novice to the experienced hiker. A popular maintained trail snakes around Byers Lake while dozens of other trails that are barely maintained and scream with adventure are peppered throughout the rest of the park. Guided hikes are also available for those who want some help trekking through unknown territory. Camping and wildlife viewing are other ideal activities in this park. See the Resources section below for more information.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Scenic drives and the historic site of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush are two major claims to fame for Wrangell-St. Elias, the largest national park in the world. Spanning across the state's Eastern Interior, this park features the scenic Edgerton Highway/McCarthy Road, which rambles through breathtaking landscape before terminating at the ghost town Kennicott, which used to be a thriving mining town. In addition to scenic drives and abandoned mining towns, this park offers hiking, camping and lots of wildlife watching and tracking. See Resources for more information.

Pribilof Islands

Bird watchers will be flying high on the state Southwestern Pribilof Islands, an ideal spot to spy on all our feathered friends---and beyond. The island are best known for their expansive wildlife. The island chain was formed by a volcanic range submerged beneath the ocean and boasts a huge marine mammal population, like the 1 million seals that return to breed every summer. Folks will also get to experience the Aluet natives, since the area hosts the largest Aluet population on Earth. See Resources for more information.
