While many people enjoy Aruba for its nightlife, casinos and endless beaches, outdoor enthusiasts like to take advantage of its water sport opportunities. However, if you want to enjoy the best of both worlds, you will need some savvy packing skills.
Snorkeling, Scuba and Surfing Gear
Now that airlines are charging extra baggage fees, you need to make an informed decision about shipping your gear. Of course, there are hundreds of gear rental shops throughout Aruba, but they can be pretty expensive. Weigh the costs of renting gear and baggage fees, and make an informed decision.
Sunscreen and Bug Spray
Even low-end brands of sunscreen are expensive in Aruba, so be sure to pack your own. Choose waterproof sunscreen with a minimum 33 SPF. You also might want to pack some aloe gel in case you do get burned. Bug spray containing DEET is advised if you plan to hike.
First Aid Kid
Your first aid kit should include bandages, antibacterial ointment, an ACE bandage and medication for cuts.
Shoes
You will need a pair of beach shoes, hiking shoes and dressier shoes for the evening.
Bathing Suit and Cover Ups
The type of suit you will use for scuba or other water sports is different from what you might wear while lying on the beach. In other words, thong bikinis are not appropriate. Bring a cover-up for hanging out on the beach for late-afternoon happy hour.
Dressy Clothes and a Sweater
While Aruba is relatively informal, people do like to dress for dinner. A casual dress and a nice pair of slacks is sufficient. Aruba restaurants tend to be heavily air-conditioned, so bring a light sweater, shawl or jacket.
Passports
Passports are now required for Aruba. Be sure to bring you driver's license in case your passport gets lost.
Workout Clothes
Most Aruba hotels have some sort of fitness center, so be sure to bring your workout clothes.
Sunglasses
Choose sunglasses with UVA & UVB protection .
