Cheap Hostels in Syracuse, Italy

Syracuse was one of the great cities of the ancient Mediterranean, as well as the largest city of modern Sicily. Its long, rich history makes it a place that is packed with ancient ruins and monuments. Syracuse also has good access to the heights of fiery Mount Etna, sunny beaches and good sailing, as well as serving as the natural starting point for exploring the rest of the island. However, Italy has never been known as a cheap country to visit, and staying in hostels is a good way to keep costs down while in Syracuse.

LoL Hostel

This hostel is located in an old 19th century palace, and was renovated in July 2009. The result is a hostel with modern, Euro-style appointments in an Old World setting. The options include 20 bed dorms, 8 bed dorms, 4 bed rooms and private double rooms. All the rooms are air conditioned, and every room has a separate bath. While staying in the dorm obviously means you won't have a private bathroom, at least you are only sharing it with your bunkmates and not the entire hostel. There is a common room with free Internet, as well as a courtyard garden. There is no curfew or lock-out. In August 2009 (the peak rate for the year), the cheapest bunk was 22 euros, and the private rooms were 35 euros, with linens included.

Sleep in Sicily

Sleep in Sicily operates a network of small B and B-style hostels located throughout Sicily, with ten hostels in Syracuse alone. The Syracuse "headquarters" facility was offering a deal of 3 nights in a private room at 23 euros per person, per night, which was competitive with the prices for a bunk in the other hostels in the city, and most of the others offered the same deal but at a rate of 20 euros per night. The most expensive room did not exceed a rate of 52 euros per night, even during the high season.

B&B Eurialo

This hostel-B&B is the option for those who don't want to stay in the heart of the city, and serves as a great base if you want to tour Sicily by bicycle. It is situated amid the hilly countryside outside of town, and only a few minutes walk from Eurialo Castle. There is a pleasant garden and terrace with great views of the city and countryside. The Eurialo has free parking for motorcycles, scooters and bicycles, as well as free WiFi. Breakfast is included in the rate, and the facility is both pet-friendly and has several green, eco-friendly features. However, it should be noted that most of the rooms have a shared bathroom.
