Boardman River
This river near Traverse City is great for trout fishing. The area is surrounded by a swamp, so be prepared with your hip waders. With Traverse City nearby, you even have a hotel nearby to stay if you aren't the camping type.
Lake St. Clair
Found near Detroit, Lake St. Clair is highly touted for its bass fishing. However, years ago this area was known particularly as a dead spot. Some of that prejudice may still exist, giving you some peaceful time fishing.
Pere Marquette River
This river is found near Baldwin. Depending on the time of year you can find steelhead, salmon or brown trout. In the fall and winter, steelhead makes their way from the mouth up the river. At the end of summer into the middle of fall, salmon are visiting. During the rest of the year brown trout inhabit this lovely river.
Au Sable River
Grayling, Michigan houses one of the largest trout fisheries in the state. This is also a great area for fly fishing. TU (Trout Unlimited) has been working to help prevent the erosion of the banks that choke off the river and this makes the fishing a better experience.
Little Manistee River
This river near Wellston, Michigan is great for fly fishing as well. Depending on the season you can get a different assortment. Steelhead hit the river in the winter, while salmon are prevalent in the middle of the summer. Rainbow trout and brown trout are frequent during the spring and early summer.
