Things to Do in Cocoa Beach, Florida

Things to Do in Cocoa Beach, Florida
Cocoa beach isn't as popular as other beaches in Florida. The town is located on a barrier island, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Banana River Lagoon off the central east coast of Florida. While the town's outdoor recreation is not as famous as other beach towns, Cocoa Beach provides an interesting experience equal to other Florida beach towns. Things to do in Cocoa Beach include the original location of the Ron Jon Surf Shop, a bike trail running along the coast, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Florida Solar Energy Center.

Florida Solar Energy Center

The Florida Solar Energy Center opened in 1975 in search of alternate energy sources. The establishment created items and received patients for energy-saving utilities such as a high-efficiency air conditioner condenser fan. In 2009, tours of the center featured an explanatory video. Tours are limited to 25 individuals the second Thursday of each month at 2 p.m. The tours last approximately 2 ½ hours.

Ron Jon Surf Shop

Cocoa beach is the home of the original Ron Jon Surf Shop. The company began in 1959, just as fiberglass surfboards and the sport of surfing gained popularity. In 2009, the Cocoa Beach location was dressed in turquoise complete with a glass elevator and a waterfall. It remains open 24 hours, 365 days of the year. This location is the only location to offer local talent, such as a high school marching band, a place to perform
