Things to Do in Waikiki

Things to Do in Waikiki

Diane Groves: sxc.hu

Waikiki is one of the most popular hot spots on the island of Oahu. Just a 10 minute drive from Honolulu, the state of Hawaii's capital, Waikiki offers some of the island's best beaches and shopping. Discover some of these attractions on a Hawaiian vacation you will never forget.

Watch an Outdoor Movie

Skip the stuffy theater for an outdoor movie on Queen's Beach, just one block off the main Waikiki strip. Every Sunday at sunset, a local community organization plays Hollywood blockbusters for your viewing pleasure. Bring a beach chair or towel and enjoy family-friendly flicks as the sun sets. In addition, free Hawaiian art and craft fairs are typically held in the park adjacent to the beach.

Go Swimming

World-famous Waikiki Beach stretches all along the Waikiki strip and is steps from almost every major hotel in the area. For the best swimming, head to any spot between the Royal Hawaiian Hotel (Seaside and Kalakaua Avenues) and Kapiolani Beach Park (Monsarrat and Kalakaua Avenues). The beach's gentle slope and seawall ensure a calm swimming experience. For a little adventure, rent surf boards and take lessons from the various vendors typically found near the pier at the intersection of Ohua and Kalakaua Avenues.

Shop 'Til You Drop

The main Waikiki strip, along Kalakaua Aenue, is home to world-famous boutiques and luxury shops, including outlets for Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Leave the strip for even more shopping. The Royal Hawaiian Center is Waikiki's largest open-air mall, offering a mixture of mainland and local shops surrounded by lush palm trees. The center also has some of the area's best restaurants, including Ezogiku and Maui Tacos. The International Marketplace is the area's second biggest shopping area. A collection of shops built around a massive waterfall, the marketplace is one of the best places to pick up cheap souvenirs and trinkets.
