Magellan Vs Garmin Handheld GPS

Magellan Vs Garmin Handheld GPS

Ton Koldewijn: sxc.hu

Magellan and Garmin are two of the largest manufacturers of Global Positioning System, or GPS, devices in the United States. Both companies design and produce the devices aimed at drivers and outdoor enthusiasts who wish to pinpoint and track their location anywhere on the planet. Before you purchase a GPS device, consider the several differences between the two companies' products.

Portability and Durability

When hiking or traveling, compact GPS devices are preferable. Magellan and Garmin manufacture compact GPS models identical in size and weight, and both use high-capacity batteries that are able to run for several hours without needing recharging. Durability is likewise comparable, as both devices are made of impact-resistant plastic.

Waypoints

Both Garmin and Magellan devices are capable of utilizing up to 500 waypoints while navigating. However, while all Magellan devices can monitor and display the device's altitude in relation to the waypoints, this feature is not enabled across all Garmin products. Thus, hikers who are interested in knowing their altitude while on a mountain may prefer a Magellan handheld GPS.

Routes

Devices from either manufacturer can display the same number of routes. However, some Garmin devices can display more legs per routes, or turns and changes in the route. Hence, Garmin may be a better choice if you plan to make many complex turns or changes in your trip.

Dimension Modes

Both Garmin and Magellan can display 2D and 3D maps. However, Magellan allows users to force the device into 2D mode while Garmin only displays 2D maps when 3D maps are unavailable. Those who prefer the simpler view of 2D may go with Magellan devices.
