A List of the Best Underwater Surfing Cameras

A List of the Best Underwater Surfing Cameras
Surfers need a camera that's capable of taking a beating on the rough waters, easy to operate underwater and offers a range of underwater settings. The best choices include one that's ideal for beginners with easy modes and larger-sized buttons, one that offers consistent quality of performance and one that's built for extreme sports performance.

Pentax Optio W60

This 10.0 megapixel waterproof camera is recommended for beginners needing their first underwater digital camera. The W60 comes with a video mode and is capable of up to 75 minutes of video recording in addition to digital photography. Image modes available include underwater movie, underwater image, surf mode, sport and wide angle. The W60 has extremely high ISO range to maximize the light in difficult situations and can operate up to 13 feet below water for a maximum of two hours. The W60's buttons are clearly labeled and easier to read underwater than any of the other current market choices.

Olympus Stylus 1030SW

The Stylus 1030SW is a strong choice, with a sealant system of rubber O-rings designed as a secondary precaution against leaks and a stainless steel and aluminum body that's strong enough to take a beating. While the Stylus 1030SW does not have as great an ISO range as the Pentax W60, it has no outer time limit on durability, so surfers can shoot all day long without worry. The Stylus 1030SW has four underwater modes but no specific surf mode. But it does have a continuous frame mode that allows you to capture your surf action in play-by-play feel.

Olympus Stylus Tough 8000

The Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 is a compact camera that can withstand cold temperatures, with a low operation threshold of 14 degrees, meaning it can handle even the most frigid surf water with optimal performance. While you can get a plastic case for additional protection, the camera can go up to 33 feet underwater without it. The Stylus Tough 8000 has 12 megapixels.

The camera is shake-resistant with optical stabilization and automatic high ISO, giving you a better chance at getting clear action shots while surfing.

The image quality is not as great on the Stylus as some other models, but this is definitely the toughest camera on the market. For surfers who need an underwater camera that can take a real beating, this is the clear choice. The Stylus Tough 8000 has been tested in snow and extreme cold, dropped repeatedly from up to six feet and stepped on. Where other waterproof cameras might fail, this one stood up to a severe beating.
