Rhine River, Switzerland
The Rhine River in the Graubunden region of Switzerland has some of the best white water rafting in all of Europe. Head to the 12.5-mile stretch of rapids between Llanz and Reichenau for class 3 and 4 rafting. This area in eastern Switzerland is home to the massive Ruinaulta gorge often referred to as Switzerland's Grand Canyon. Jagged cliffs hem in the cascading river, and visitors will enjoy the forested landscape. This is a good place for beginner and intermediate rafters. Go between May and October.
Tay River, Scotland
The Tay River in Scotland is easily reached by car or bus from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The white water rapids of the Tay River flow down the southern Scottish Highlands. Excursions can be taken from the towns of Stanley and Aberfeldy. This is one of Scotland's biggest rivers, and the rapids are fast here. The run is a class 3, and the lack of large boulders makes for a relatively safe ride. Beginners and intermediate rafters will enjoy the Tay River as they pass through the green hills of Scotland. Trips are scheduled throughout the year, with gentler waters in the summer months.
Inn River, Austria
The Inn River is a tributary of the mighty Danube River in Austria. White water rapids wind their way through Austria's Tyrolean Alps. Trips depart from the towns of Imst, Landeck, and Haiming. The Landeck Gorge has class 4 and 5 rapids for advanced rafters who can handle powerful currents and narrow passes. The Imst section of the river has class 3 rapids for beginners. Take a rafting trip between May and September. The warmer summer months in Austria are especially enjoyable for white water excursions.
