Sushi Zen in Arlington
Arlington is best known for being home to the Arlington National Cemetery, but it is also the city that houses Sushi Zen. The latter, founded in 1997, claims to be Arlington's favorite Japanese restaurant. On the restaurant's walls are numerous awards backing up this claim, including awards from Northern Virginia Living magazine. Take a seat at its sushi bar for the city's freshest sushi, served on an entertaining miniature Japanese fishing boat. Try the sashimi combo, served with hot miso soup. The "Taste of Japan" platter is a favorite and includes seven types of sushi plus tempura and Japanese ice cream.

Osaka Sushi is a trendy, hip sushi joint popular among Richmond's younger crowd and known for its stylish interior decor as well as its tantalizing sushi combos based on authentic Japanese recipes with Virginian flair. For example, its Mt. Fuji Shrimp takes fresh East Coast rock shrimp and fries it in a golden batter served with a drizzle of tangy Osaka sauce. The restaurant recommends newcomers try its Sashimi Ceviche, an inventive take on traditional sashimi and made with fresh slivers of yellowtail, albacore tuna and salmon. The menu is slightly expensive, with the average price in 2009 starting at $15.
