Sightseeing in Ocean City, New Jersey

Denise M. Ruggieri

Ocean City, N.J., South Jersey's favorite family sea shore resort, is the perfect place to take your family for a fun-filled yet relaxing vacation. With 2 1/2 miles of action-packed activities on the boardwalk, 8 miles of pristine beaches and plenty of water sports and nature viewing, there is something for everyone. Visit for the day or spend the entire week. Just a little over an hour from Philadelphia and less than 1/2 hour from Atlantic City, Ocean City is close by and easily accessible.

The Boardwalk

The Boardwalk

Stroll the boardwalk in Ocean City for hours of entertainment. Meander through unique boutiques filled with clothing, jewelry, household trinkets and Ocean City related souvenirs. As you work your way down the boards, enjoy seashore favorites including Johnson's caramel popcorn, Kohrs soft serve ice cream, Mac and Manco pizza and TJ's funnel cake. A trip to the shore wouldn't be complete without visiting Gillian's Wonderland Pier. Located at Sixth Street and the Boardwalk, this playland offers more than 35 rides for kids of all ages.

The Beach

A white sandy beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is the perfect setting for sunbathing, swimming or playing Frisbee. Make a sandcastle or take a stroll along the water's edge. Beach badges are required and cost $5 a day, $10 for the week or $20 for the entire summer season. Badges can be purchased at each entrance to the beach, at City Hall, The Music Pier or at the 46th Street Post Office. Private showers are available at 13 Street and Ocean Avenue from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. To learn more about the shells on the beach and various wildlife that makes their home there, take a beach walk. The tour lasts about 1 hour and is $1 for adults and .50 for children. Tours begin at the south end of Central Avenue.

Wildlife Viewing

Bring a hat, suntan lotion and your binoculars for spectacular views of local and migrating wildlife. Corson's Inlet State Park, Bayside Center, located at 520 Bay Ave., and Howard Stainton Wildlife Refuge, located on Bay Avenue between 23rd and 30th streets, are a few of the best places to see nature. Ocean City is one stop along the Atlantic Flyaway offering views of migrating shore birds, wading birds and waterfowl. Dolphins, sea otters and whales can be spotted along these areas as well.

Watersports

See Ocean City from a different perspective. Rent a a jet ski, take a water-soaked speedboat ride on "Stormin," enjoy a gentle breeze while parasailing or bumper tubing. For details, see the Resources section of this page.
