La Manga del Mar Menor is a resort town in Spain located on a narrow strip of land near Murcia, separating the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor. Water is the name of the game here, from the most benign floating and boating to the thrill of flying through the air on a surfboard pulled by a kite. In keeping with the full-immersion approach to life that Spaniards are famous for, this coastal community allows ample opportunity to get your feet thoroughly wet. Championship golf courses provide a more sedate alternative, and open-air cinemas are popular in the evenings.

Water Activities

For water activities across the board, consider spending the day at one of La Manga's beach clubs, where equipment rentals, lessons and certifications can be easily accessed in one place. Pepino's Jet Beach Club offers jet skiing, water skiing and wake boarding, with or without lessons. Its jet-ski courses cover basic, racing and freestyle. For a more relaxing time in the water, kayaks and pedal boats are also available, as well as snorkeling equipment, umbrellas and sunbeds.

If specialty sports are on your list of things that make a great vacation, then La Manga offers one of the most unique water sports in Europe. Kite surfing uses wind power to pull riders across the water on a specialized surfboard, maneuvered by a large kite. Controlled flying and jumping, as well as tricks performed by "board grabs," are popular advanced features of this sport. Beginners, however, can learn the basics of kite surfing with lessons from the Mas Kite company in La Manga. Generally, the courses are spread over three days, two hours per day, and actual sailing/surfing on the third day. All equipment, including wetsuit, is provided. Operating months are March through October.

Boat Charters

Boating is a given in La Manga. Four separate channels connect the two seas here, with the largest channel, El Estacio, providing boaters with access to both bodies of water. The Tomas Maestre marina is adjacent to the channel, with more than 1,000 moorings, as well as shops and restaurants. Charters and boat trips are available from many marinas along the coasts of both seas. Luxury yachts and sailboats are offered as full charters or private rentals by the hour or day, with lessons and licensing if needed. The Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera can be reached in a day of sailing time.
