The Cincinnati area offers a multitude of family friendly and children centered activities in the great outdoors. The Hamilton County Park District holds special events throughout the year. Activities and programs are designed to enhance a youngster's appreciation of nature and increase physical activity.

The Mitchell Memorial Forest Mountain Bike Trails are open daily, with a special "Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day" held annually in early October. The children's guided ride and special activities are hosted by the CORA organization. The forest covers more than 1,000 acres, which includes a four-mile mountain bike and hiking trail. A wood duck nature walk, River Hill Pond, picnic areas and playground are also available at the Mitchell Memorial Forest complex.

Parky's Playbarn at Winton Woods offers a barn-themed playground inside of a refurbished dairy barn. Children can also enjoy pony and wagon rides when weather permits. Educational and farm life learning programs are offered throughout the year. An outdoor water play area, hiking trails, miniature golf, Frisbee gold and bicycle trails are also available. Picnic areas are located near the Winton Woods Harbor area.

Miami Whitewater Forest

Miami Whitewater Forest offers paddleboat rentals during warm weather months. Boaters traverse around the lake with water squirting geysers. A wet playground area, fitness trails and a soccer complex are also kid friendly features. Camping and picnic areas are available throughout the year.

University of the Great Outdoors

The "University of the Great Outdoors" is a yearlong combination of special activities and natural learning programs for children at parks in Cincinnati. Activities range from wilderness skills and primitive methods training to a mini-triathlon held during the fall. Children can participate in kayak classes, archery, fishing, mountain biking, glow disc golf and rock climbing. Membership in the "Curious Naturalist Club" is open to children age 12 and younger. Through activities at area parks, children learn about nature, outdoor athletics and native wildlife by participating in special Hamilton Count Park District programming.
