Things to Do in Ohio in December

Ohio Department of Natural Resources

Winter does not mean the end of outdoor pursuits in Ohio. Bundling up and hitting the trails for a free or low-cost day of physical activity in the Hocking Hills area provides amazing, winter-wonderland sights for the entire family. Holiday events mixed with the great outdoors provide a recipe for not only fun, but also education on Ohio's native wildlife and Appalachian traditions.

The Christmas in Ash Cave Evening Hike is a popular event in the Old Man's Cave area of the Hocking Hills. Each year during the first weeks of December, the two-hour hike is held along the trails of this Appalachian outdoor attraction. Visitors can travel hike along the cave rim or walk on the handicap accessible paved areas of Ash Cave. Warm cocoa and refreshments are served over an open fire by Hocking Hills' staff and volunteers. Park naturalists are on hand to guide visitors and help an old-fashioned Santa Claus decorate the wildlife Christmas tree. The tree is adorned with edible treats to provide sustenance to native Ohio critters throughout the winter months.
