Only three miles to the south of busy downtown Myrtle Beach is Myrtle Beach State Park, which was established in the 1930s as a conservation effort. It has more than 300 acres of protected forests and beachfront. Bird watching is a popular year-round activity in the park. Fishing off the pier is allowed with the purchase of a daily fishing license. The pier also houses a gift shop where visitors can get snacks, souvenirs and bait. The park is home to the last stretch of maritime forest located on South Carolina's Northern coast is The Sculptured Oak Nature Trail. An equestrian trail is open from late November though February each year. The park has a visitor center which has educational programs about the local dolphins, sea turtles, plants and birds. Other amenities include playgrounds, picnic areas and shelters.
