The Rural Appalachian Ohio Revisited one-day nature event is held at Lake Hope State Park during the third full week in October annually. This event, often referred to as R.O.A.R. Day, draws immense crowds and features crafts, music, food, hikes, animals, as well as hands-on historical Ohio activities for children. The Fort Rowdy Gathering is held the first full weekend of October at the community park in Covington, Ohio. This frontier period-themed event offers campfire food, music, a parade, as well as a mountain man encampment along the Stillwater River. For additional information, call (937) 473-5439. Grandma Gatewood Trail Hike

Hocking Hills naturalists lead hikers on a 6-mile trek through Old Man's Cave during the annual Grandma Gatewood Trail hike. This event is held in the middle of October each year. This hike is recommended for physically-fit hikers and lasts approximately four hours. Participants travel over rock bridges, cliffs and past waterfalls while hiking from Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls. Lake Hope State Park Fall Hike

The fall hike at Lake Hope State Park provides participants with comfortable hiking boots the opportunity to explore the Appalachian hills of Vinton County during the peak of the fall foliage season. After a hearty bowl of bean soup and cornbread cooked outdoors, the mile naturalist guided hike begins. Hikers begin at the nature center and end the trek at the historic Hope Furnace area. Visitors also are treated to a cup of freshly brewed Sasssafras tea during the hike among the hills of the Lake Hope area. This event takes place during the middle of October annually.
