Myrtle Beach State Park is 3 miles from downtown Myrtle Beach, making it just a short drive from the many hotels near the beach. The park protects beachfront and forests, and features the Sculptured Oak Nature Trail, which is the last section of maritime forest on South Carolina's Northern coast. Visitors can enjoy the picnic areas, playgrounds and shelters. The educational programs provided by the nature center teach visitors about wildlife and birds in the park and nearby ocean. The center houses saltwater aquariums, live reptiles and interactive nature displays. Outback is a wildlife habitat which includes a butterfly garden, bird feeders and houses, and nature sculptures. The forest has been named a Heritage Trust Site. The pier has a gift shop that sells snacks, souvenirs and bait. Fishing off the pier is permitted for a fee. Other park activities include bird watching and the equestrian trail for visitors who bring their own horses.
