China
China Airlines is the largest national carrier with multiple divisions serving different segments of China and the Asian Pacific. China Airlines is state-owned. Grand China Air is the country's fourth-largest carrier and is part private and part state-owned. Cathay Pacific is based in Hong Kong and has a discount airline brand (Dragonair). Shanghai Airlines and Mandarin Air are both independent Chinese airlines on mainland China. Shanghai is the second-oldest privately owned airline, starting service in 1985. Xiamen Airlines is the oldest privately run airline in China, starting in 1984. Hainan Airlines is the largest private airline, serving parts of Europe, Asia and North America. EVA Airways is based in Taipei, Taiwan, and along with its subsidiary Uni Air, are the two main carriers based on the island of Taiwan.
Pacific Islands
Japan has a nationally named air carrier, Japan Airlines. Japan also has ANA Sky, based in Tokyo. The newest carrier in Japan's market is Skymark Airways, started in 1998. Singapore has two airlines, Singapore Airlines and Silk Air. Malaysia is served by Malaysia Airlines internationally and its subsidiary Firefly, which serves domestic passengers since 2007. Malaysia Airlines also owns Drukair. The Philippines has two international carriers (Philippine Airlines and Seair), one discount fare carrier (Cebu Pacific) and one express carrier (Air Philippines), which is a subsidiary of Philippine Airlines. Indonesia has one airline, Garuda Indonesia.
East Asia
Five countries in East Asia have national airlines using their country as the airline name; Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Burma and Nepal. Burma also has three other airlines: Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Yangon Airlines (named for the city) and Air Bagan. Korea has Korean Air and Asiair, which are both based in Seoul. Nepal has a regional carrier (Gorkha Airlines) that provides domestic flights. Bangkok Airways is based in Thailand and serves three company-owned airports.
