Kiawah Island, S.C., a resort-type beach area that is well known for its natural beauty and local attractions, is close to Charleston's historic downtown area (approximately 20 miles away), which has an abundance of shops, restaurants, artistic attractions and historical architecture. Kiawah is more secluded and private. Whether you're taking the family on vacation or looking for a place for personal relaxation, Kiawah Island has what you're looking for.

Golf

Kiawah is well known for its pristine golf courses. There are five: Ocean Course, Cougar Point, Osprey Point, Oak Point and Turtle Point. These courses have hosted PGA (Professional Golf Association) tournaments and are highly rated by golf media sources such as "Golf Digest." The movie, "The Legend of Bagger Vance," also was filmed at one of the courses.

Beach Walker County Park

Enjoy the beauty of the ocean at Beach Walker County Park. Besides a beautiful shoreline, this park also offers a boardwalk, refreshments and restrooms. There are picnic areas and grills for public use. You also have the option of renting bikes, body boards, chairs and umbrellas. Lifeguards are present during the peak season.

Tower Views

There are two towers from which you can gain birds' eye views of the island and surrounding marshes. One is Marsh Island Tower, which is located inside the Vanderhorst Plantation. You can't drive into this plantation area, but you can bike there. The plantation house originally was the residence of one of South Carolina's early governors. The is Marsh View Towers, which overlooks the marsh and one of the golf courses.
