America sometimes seems as though it is one great big megalopolis threatening to connect New York to Los Angeles. The facts are somewhat different. Many fabulous places still exist in America to go camping and get back to nature. All across this big country you can find campgrounds and parks suitable to what you are looking for most in a camping experience.

Roosevelt State Park, Mississippi

Located in Morton, this is one of the nicest places to go camping in the entire southeast. This state park features 109 multipurpose sites that are each equipped with picnic tables and grill. Among the special amenities featured here are catering for large groups and a meeting room. You will never have the chance to get bored at Roosevelt State Park. Entertainment possibilities range from seasonal festivals to slide shows to live performances at the amphitheater. Hiking trails range from moderate to very difficult. Other recreation includes water skiing, boating, tennis, disc golf, archery and there is even a field for playing softball or football.

Searsport Shores Camping Resort, Maine

Expansive stretches of private beaches on rocky coastal Maine is the prime draw of this highly rated campsite. The park features 10 RV hookups, 30 tent sites and 70 multipurpose sites. Come for the view and stay for the endless variety of outdoor recreation and indoor fun. There are enough things to do here to suit every taste: canoeing, kayaking, hiking and biking trails, swimming, nature walks, baseball and volleyball. A communal feel permeates this site as you can partake of potluck dinners, treasure hunts, and arts and craft classes.

Arkansas River Rim Campground, Colorado

Don't be fooled by the name; this magnificent campground is surrounded by the gorgeous mountains of Buena Vista, Colorado. The park has 36 RV sites and 7 tent sites. In addition to the spectacle of the mountains, the park features the river and forested areas that provide plenty of opportunity for hiking. One aspect that distinguishes this campsite from the others on this list is the chance to actually go panning for gold. There is also the opportunity to get in some mountain climbing in one of the most beautiful areas of the country.

Olympic National Park, Washington

Olympic National Park is a camper's paradise due to the gorgeous scenery and astonishing wealth of hiking trails. There are many campgrounds from which to choose, but all are based on a first come/first serve basis. The campgrounds have a 14 day limit and during winter you may find some of them have been closed. Permits are required for backcountry camping in the park. The most amazing thing about camping here are the 600 miles of hiking trails, including those in the Hoh Rain Forest section of the park.
