Corolla is located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. With a population of only 500 full-time residents, Corolla is mainly a vacation destination. Unlike other beach areas, Corolla does not have an active nightlife. However, this can be appealing to outdoor enthusiasts, who would prefer to get a good night's sleep and wake up early to enjoy the activities the area has to offer.

Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education

An understanding of Outer Banks wildlife and ecology can enhance your appreciation of the area's outdoor activities. The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education offers a variety of free programs that explore topics such as North Carolina birding, ocean ecology, animal tracking and orienteering.

Kayaking

The Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary is located between Duck and Corolla. It consists of eight square miles of marsh land. Between March and September, the Coastal Kayaking Company offers kayak tours of this area. The tours begin with a 10-minute hike down the Audubon trail to the kayaks. In 2009, the three-hour tour cost $50 for adults and $25 for children.

Surf or Skate

Here's a novel idea for a group with mixed interests. The Island Revolution Surf Co. and skate park behind its surf shop. The park has a variety of features, including bowls, a quarter pipe, grind bars and vertical drop-ins. Helmets are required. During the the summer, there's free skating on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. You can take a 90-minute skate lesson. Classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. In 2009, they cost $30.

For those who would prefer to play in the water, the surf shop at Island Revolution offers surf rentals and lessons. In 2009, the two-hour lessons cost between $50 and $75, depending on how many people are in the class. Lessons take place on Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
