The Hudson River, named for famed explorer Henry Hudson, flows from Albany, the capital of New York, to the Atlantic Ocean near New York City. While this river is mainly a commuter route for tankers, it also cuts through the Hudson River Valley, one of the most scenic parts of New York State. Taking a cruise on the Hudson is sure to brighten even the most hardened city dweller's soul.

The Commander

The Commander cruise takes passengers from Peeksville, New York, to West Point, New York. This three-hour voyage trip passes many historic Hudson River towns. Chartered by Hudson Highland Cruises, this fully narrated tour operates from May through October on the last Saturday of each month. Tours cost $20 to $30.

Rip Van Winkle

On board the Rip Van Winkle, passengers travel through some of the more majestic areas on the Hudson River. Passengers will view some of the most expensive riverside mansions and estates. This cruise also can take passengers on a fall trip to view the famous New York foliage. The Rip Van Winkle is even available for moonlight cruises and wedding cruises. Rates vary, but for general tours, prices range from $12 to $18.

Dutch Apple Cruises

Dutch Apple Cruise lines operates a variety of Hudson River scenic cruises. From a two-hour, midday sightseeing tour to the Sunday brunch tour or the New York State Museum historic cruise, Dutch Apple cruises offer something to interest a variety of travelers. Included on most tours--especially dinner cruises--is on-board entertainment. The rates vary, but for standard sightseeing tours, tickets range from $10 to $15.
