Where to Vacation in Maine for Teenagers

Where to Vacation in Maine for Teenagers
Vacationing with teenagers can be difficult. With various entertainment mediums--iPods, iPhones, portable DVD players--available at one's fingertips, getting a teenager engaged can be challenging. Maine offers a number of vacation destinations that'll ensure fun for the entire family--even those sullen teenagers.

Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor is one of the most storied locations in Maine. The main event in Bar Harbor is Acadia National Park. This area offers spectacular mountain vistas and lush evergreen forests. Challenge your teenager to beat you up the mountainside to catch the sunset over the harbor. Or, bring your teenager to Lone Sand Beach where he or she can scope out the other teens on the beach. And, if you can't interest them in these sights, you're sure to succeed with a warm, delicious bowl of lobster or clam bisque at one of the many seaside restaurants.

Mt. Katahdin

Mt. Katahdin is the tallest mountain in Maine. Its majestic peak challenges hikers of all fitness levels. Young, spry teenagers will love to scramble over the house-sized boulders above treeline after a strenuous 4-mile climb. And, for the real danger-seekers, the summit offers the Knife Edge--a perilous and narrow ridge a few miles long with steep drops on either side. Either way, a summit picture will surely land on a teenager's bedroom wall--a point of pride indeed.

Freeport

For those who love shopping, you can't beat Freeport. This cozy community is enlivened with over 200 shops. These will leave even the most sarcastic teen girls gleefully running about, picking up the latest trends. In addition, a short ferry ride away is Bustin's Island--a part of Freeport but its own self-governing entity. This island offers hiking and beaches--both of which should whet your teen's appetite for adventure.
