Known as the Queen of American Lakes, Lake George is a narrow stretch of water that is 200 feet deep and offers some of the clearest waters of any lake in the Northern United States. It is a prime resort destination and was once the summer escape of choice for the rich and famous, including the Rockefeller, Roosevelt and Vanderbilt families. Even today, Lake George offers a variety of outdoor activities to fit visitors of every taste and budget.

Boating

Boating, kayaking and other water sports are a must-do in Lake George. If you have your own kayak, bring it along. Or if you need to rent, there are numerous shops in the area. Once ready, you can head off or join a guided tour and explore the lake with others. Half-day tours (about four hours) are the most popular and usually take visitors through areas known for beautiful scenery with opportunities for photography and bird watching. Some tours are combined with hiking trips, many complete with high-energy snacks and at least one stop for a picnic. Many companies also offer paddling instruction and tips before a tour or rental.

Prospect Mountain

Prospect Mountain, with a 2,021-foot summit, offers some of the best hiking trails in northern New York State. Trails start on the edge of town, so there's easy access to the trails and it's possible to reach the summit in a day. Some of the trails cross the abandoned tracks of the 1898 incline railway car that made its way up Prospect Mountain. A "viewmobile" (vans that stop at strategic lookout points) can take you down once you reached the top. Or you can take the van up and hike your way down to the parking lot. Autumn is the best time to explore the mountain, as the reds and browns of the trees are at their best.
